The Corner Bistro Brings Their Popular Burgers (And So Much More) to Long Island City

Bite into one of New York City’s most infamous burgers at The Corner Bistro’s newest location in Long Island City. Take the 7 train – only one stop from Midtown – to what’s becoming a true neighborhood for delicious grub, such as one of my newest favorites, Alobar. Who knew LIC would be the next foodie destination?

When it’s cold and snowy, what’s more comforting than a hearty, cheesy burger topped with crispy bacon? Corner Bistro’s burger is cooked to order and to perfection (which for me means medium rare) and topped with melted American cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomato and pickles for a great classic burger. This is the type of cheeseburger that almost anyone will fall in love with. Haven’t you seen those crazy lines outside the original location downtown?

While the West Village bar doesn’t offer a brunch menu, the new joint has an extended menu for NYC’s favorite meal at an affordable $9 – $12 per dish, like their Chicken Club Wrap, Chunky Chicken Salad and Sweet Potato Fries.
Take my advice and don’t just indulge in the Bistro Burger – try the wings! Also only available at the LIC location, these babies are fresh – never frozen – bought directly from the butcher. Plump chicken wings are served piping hot with a creamy blue cheese to cure your weekend hangover or make a game day meal that much spicier.

You should also warm up with their chili, featuring ground beef and beans slow cooked in a rich tomato base, then topped with diced white onion and cheese. Chili is both a sports fan favorite and the best way to heat up your hands and belly on a wintery night in the city.

This bar and restaurant is even family friendly with a special kids menu. Treat your little ones to the Kid’s Grilled Cheese (half grilled cheese served with fries) or Kid’s Burger (a smaller size than the adult portion served with fries).

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – get yourself to Long Island City (before everyone else finds out)! xo

Date Nights Made Easy With Free Dates From HowAboutWe For Couples

When the popular dating site HowAboutWe asked me to check out their recently launched HowAboutWe for Couples subscription service, I couldn’t resist taking them up on their offer for a free delicious date night with my guy.

If you missed my first post, HowAboutWe for Couples is a subscription service designed specifically for those in a relationship. Each month, you and your significant other receive a new “DateBook” filled with pre-planned, one-of-a-kind experiences in your city. Of course there’s always something exciting to do on a date in NYC, but this new subscription site is offering curated dates to make your nights out with your loved one even more special!

After my boyfriend got over mono this holiday season, we finally attended our booked date this past week. “In Due Course” featured a four-course dinner at chef Todd English’s Olives, including an appetizer, pasta to share, an entree for two, three glasses of wine (per guest) and a chef’s dessert selection. As a foodie blogger and freelance writer in the world of New York City dining, this HowAboutWe for Couples date was a must-book for me!

When we entered Olives, we were immediately whisked away from the commotion of Union Square and transported into a classy hotel bar for what felt like a sexy dinner meeting. Once we checked in with our reservation and mentioned HowABoutWe, we were seated with our special menu and served by an attentive and friendly waiter who welcomed us with glasses of Prosecco for a dinner date toast.

Crispy Carpetbaggers started our meal as a cozy comfort food bite. Truffle mash potatoes were placed on an oyster shell, then layered with a crispy fried oyster and topped with melt-in-your-mouth beef carpaccio. For the pasta course, we chose Rabbit Taglietelle, featuring a slow cooked rabbit leg ragout, foraged mushrooms and parmigiano reggiano. With this heavier fare, we followed with a lighter main course of Branzino A La Plancha topped with lump crab. Dessert arrived as a fried banana and caramel gelato with sea salt. We were full (and a bit tipsy) after this perfect winter season date night at Olives!

HowAboutWe for Couples membership is only $22 per month and includes free HowAboutWe Dates and up to to 75% off other HowAboutWe Dates outs, like the "In Due Course" night we attended or at home dates, like a chef prepared brunch delivered to your apartment for a lazy Sunday, tucked under the covers for a few extra hours. Check out the January "DateBook" here.

Now, go on and sign up for HowAboutWe for Couples and book a date night asap. Thanks to the HowAboutWe team for a lovely date night xo

Alobar is Long Island City’s Best Date Night Restaurant

Who knew Long Island City would be home to one of my favorite restaurants in NYC? As a downtown girl-about-town residing in the East Village, venturing above 14th street for a special meal is pretty rare, as my neighborhood and the surrounding blocks boast some of New York’s best restaurants, secret foodie spots and gourmet cheap eats. So a trip to an outerborough better be worth it. Luckily for me, Alobar in Long Island City exceeded my expectation and then some.

Bacon makes everything better, right? Of course! So you must (seriously, I’m giving you no choice) order Alobar’s Maple Bacon Popcorn. Yes, you read that right and can read it again: Maple. Bacon. Popcorn. Think sweet and salty to the ultimate degree. Once you pop the crunchy popcorn covered in a sweet glaze, tossed with chunks of slab bacon and cut nicely with truffle oil, you’ll wonder if you can share this bowl with your date. Decide to play nice because you can make Alobar’s ultimate snack food once you get home with this recipe:

Maple Bacon Popcorn | Recipe from Alobar, serves 6 (or 2 hungry daters)

1 teaspoon olive oil
1 pound thick-cut bacon
3/4 cup maple syrup
1 teaspoon fresh-ground black pepper
1/2 teaspoon salt
6 cups basic popcorn

Preheat an oven to 350°. Heat the olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add bacon strips and cook until crisp, turning occasionally. Remove bacon to a paper towel-lined plate; reserve 2 tablespoons bacon drippings.

Crumble bacon. Toss bacon, drippings, maple syrup, black pepper, and salt with popcorn. Spread popcorn mixture in a single layer on a parchment-lined baking sheets and bake for 10 minutes, rotating trays halfway through, stirring occasionally. Serve hot. Enjoy!
Now back to your dinner date, already in progress! Order a few of their small plates for the table, like Foie Gras and Potato Pirogies (white wine onions, apple horseradish cheese sauce) and Ginger Glazed Baby Back Ribs. Cheese lovers should also share a large plate of Mac and Cheese “Carbonara” for an indulgent four cheese blend, pancetta and a luscious poached egg on top.
The Lamb Two Ways served with fingerling potato, cippolini, brussel sprouts is tender, flavorful and just an all around outstanding main course.
End your meal on a sweet note with an ode to your childhood. Fluffernutter is a grown up version of your favorite sandwich with melted Belgian chocolate, marshmallow and peanut butter.

Treat your date or best friend to a special dinner at Alobar. From small bites to desserts, you'll find yourself in love with this LIC restaurant and planning your next trip on the 7 train to enjoy another delicious meal. Alobar is offering comfort pub fair with gourmet twists and high quality, local ingredients that is well worth the short ride out of Manhattan.

Alobar. 46-42 Vernon Boulevard. LIC.
