City Girl’s New Year’s Resolutions

Whether in a relationship, single or dating all over Manhattan, love isn’t the only New Year’s Resolution a city girl is looking to find.  A lady in the big city must resolve to better herself -from her health and body to her career.

Be Selfish.  With your time, health and career.  Make yourself your priority!  Skip that boozy brunch for spin class, miss happy hour to apply to new jobs and network with those who share your interests.

Don’t Feel Guilty.  Want to snuggle with your boyfriend over Chinese takeout instead of stopping by your coworkers birthday bash?  Just order that shrimp lo mein and send her a funny someecard.  It’s okay to “be selfish” (see Resolution #1) without the guilt.

Make Healthy Swaps.  Mix up your usual salad bar lunch date with your best girlfriend for a yoga class date together.  The hidden calories in those dressing (and your need to add extra cheese) make your greens a diet no-no.  Take the time to say “om” with your bestie as a new out-of-office afternoon tradition to beat stress and possibly trim your waist.

Start a Savings.  Or continue to add to the one you started back in high school, but have seen it since deplete over the years from college spring break trips, the broker fee on your first apartment and those Louboutins you just had to get last winter.  You never know when you’ll have an emergency and need the extra cash or will be ready to put a down payment on a home in the burbs.

Know "The Secret".  Okay, so this girl never actually read the book (but I do plan on it in 2012!).  Having a positive attitude and outlook on your life and future will at least make things seems better than they are in the present moment.  Believe that great new things are to come.  Remember what you do have in your life – family, friends, your health, an interesting job, an adorably puppy, an affordable apartment – and smile knowing if you work hard and treat others right, there are more good things to come!

Max's Burger

In New York, everyone thinks they know where to get the best burger.  In the East Village, neighbors stand behind Royale, while others prefer something a bit trendier like Korzo Haus.  Over on the west side, locals and celebs claim enjoying a burger and beer at Corner Bistro makes you a real New Yorker.  And how many people do you know that will tell you nothing beats Shake Shack, regardless of the long wait in line?
When traveling out of Manhattan for long weekends and the holidays, you may find yourself craving a hot, juicy, meaty burger.  If you’re traveling to Massachusetts, run; don’t walk to Max’s!  Their signature, The Max (an 8 ounce burger with cheese) gives NYC’s best burger joints some serious competition.  Cooked any way you prefer (but, seriously medium rare is the way to go), and topped with your favorites from lettuce, tomatoes and pickles, this Dartmouth burger shop is worth the day trip out of NYC.  Their burger is fresh and flavorful, without being greasy, while their buns are soft bakery-style rolls.
If you’re looking for something out of the ordinary, try the Portuguese (ground beef, ground chourico, green pepper and onion all in one patty) for a spicy kick the locals love.  With such a rich cultural heritage in the South Eastern Massachusetts area, Portuguese food in any form is a must-try!
While you’re indulging, don’t forget to order a side of fries or homemade onion rings, for a thinly sliced crispy treat.  New York City, eat your heart out.

Drink Bai for Cold Season

City girls and guys can’t help but get run down during the winter months.  Rushing to and from the office to parties, dinners and workout sessions can lower your immune system in the cold weather.  Drinking too heavily at holiday parties, on top of the lack of sleep in a hectic social life only makes matters worse.
Thankfully, there’s Bai, an antioxidant infusion drink made with coffeefruit, available all over the city, from Whole Foods to small organic food stores.  Sold in a variety of delicious flavors such as Sumatra Dragonfruit and Costa Rica Clementine, bai5 is only 5 calories a serving, so you can enjoy a delicious way to hydrate and lower your risk for catching a nasty cold without ruining your diet.

With cold season in full swing, the lovely team at Bai treated me to each flavor of Bai and bai5.  From yoga sessions to running errands around the East Village, I’ve had a bottle in hand.

As a downtown-girl-about-town, I must share that Bai and bai5 can also be used as a mixer at your upcoming New Year’s Eve party!  Serve your top shelf vodka of choice with your favorite flavor of Bai or bai5 for a delicious low calorie cocktail!  Why not prep your body with the antioxidants in a Bai product to possibly prevent some of the pain in a terrible morning-after hangover?

Check out where you can enjoy Bai products and grab a few bottles to enjoy this winter and into the spring!

Fatta Cuckoo Launches Winter Menu

The Lower East Side marks an eclectic dining destination for foodies.  From Pizzerias to French bistros, sushi to a grilled-cheese-only shop, this downtown neighborhood has it all.  While the LES doesn’t lack amazing restaurants, there are a few special gems in the crowd of quality cuisines.
Warm up this winter at the cozy Fatta Cuckoo with dishes made with love by Chef Chris Mitchell.   The lovely owner Leah Tinari and Chef Chris Mitchell planned a special tasting for Mckenzie, Sarah, James and I to indulge in 9 courses of their recently launched winter menu.  Stand out dishes include Handmade Lobster Ravioli (with Marechiaro Sauce with Lemon Zest, Chive and Olave), Chili Rubbed Pork Tenderloin (over Sweet Potato Mash with Smokey Chili Sauce), and Butternut Squash Risotto (with Crispy Sage and Butternut Seed Oil).
Fatta Cuckoo is a shining star on bustling Clinton Street.  While categorized as a small American menu, Chef Chris’s culinary influences include his southern roots, love for spice and a traditional French culinary training.  Chef Chris buys his seafood daily from Essex Street and seasonal veggies from Union Square.  Shopping local brings the freshest available ingredients into Fatta Cuckoo’s kitchen.
With a straightforward, no fuss menu, the cocktails created by the mixologist Christian pair perfectly.  These dangerous drinks are what you’d expect at a secret basement bar in Soho.  From the signature Fatta Gimlet, the Barnstormer, and a homemade eggnog for the holidays, each guest will leave a bit more than tipsy.
This winter consider the following dishes to comfort your stomach and warm up your soul.
(Sweet Potato Fritters with Chili Lime Aioli)

(Black Bean Soup with Roasted Poblano Crema and Crispy Tortillas)

(Burrata over Roasted Tomato Sauce with Fried Egg and Chili Oil)

(Handmade Lobster Ravioli with Marechiaro Sauce with Lemon Zest, Chive and Olave)

(PEI Mussels Thai Chili Tomato Broth with Cilantro, Toasted Baguette with Housemade Coconut Chili Butter)

(Chili Rubbed Pork Tenderloin over Sweet Potato Mash with Smokey Chili Sauce)

(Butternut Squash Risotto with Crispy Sage and Butternut Seed Oil)

(Braised Short Ribs over Sweet Potatoes)

(Coconut Custard Pie, Pistachio Lemon Cake, Key Lime Pie, Homemade Tortoni, Cheesecake)

Stop by Fatta Cuckoo this winter to check out the new menu and don't forget about their Generous Randy Date Night for a fabulous deal with your lover or best girlfriend!
