Dangers of a One Night Stand

(image via)

Sex with a stranger isn't always mysterious fun and games.  One night stands have an appeal from time to time, but even Samantha Jones should have taken more caution when bringing a new man home or following him to his pad.  Sometimes women in New York get too comfortable with alcohol, nightlife, and meeting new men, that we forget there are true dangers waiting late at night after a few too many cocktails.  As a big sister and a friend, it’s important to remind every city girl to be careful.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases.  You don't know who he last slept with or if his doctor gave him a clean bill of health.  STD’s can be spread with or without the use of condoms.

Stolen Goods.  Do you own expensive jewelry, a laptop, an iPod, and other small items, easily pocketed by a thief?  This sexy stranger could be a burglar, swiping your possessions while you slumber, escaping before you awaken.  Or maybe he won't take something that's yours, but sneakily steal something that belongs to your roommate.  Not only do you need to consider your own property, but the property of those you live with.

Date Rape.  Just because all you had in mind was a heavy make out session back at your place, this guy may have set his sights on sex.  If he isn't a decent man, there's a chance he could get rough and force himself on you.  He may claim it was just drunk fooling around, but if you don't want it, it's rape.

Unwanted Pregnancy.  Anytime you engage in sex, there’s a chance you can get pregnant (obviously).  But, what if the condom broke or your pill stopped working, leaving you holding a baby 9 months later, whose father you never even gave your number to?

Kidnapping.  This may seem to be the stuff of Law and Order: SVU storylines, but real headlines of intoxicated women being held hostage by seemingly normal men have happened in and around the city.  From bouncers to Wall Street traders, there isn’t a stereotype you can trust after a few too many drinks.  Take caution when following a sexy stranger away from your friends.

How to you take precautions to stay safe? xo

  3. This is truly the dumbest post I have ever read on any blog, ever. We are not in clueless. "Heavy make out sessions" in people's pads don't exist anymore. And seriously like you'd keep a kid without even getting the guys #. This is NY not Utah. Jesus.

  4. Sometimes when you're out getting drinks and you have one too many, you don't think clearly. Getting a guy's # or even his last name isn't always the first thing on your mind. Honestly, when was the last time a guy introduced himself and included his last name, or you even thought to ask?

And if these things "don't exist anymore" Phoebe, then why can't I go a single day without reading about a date rape or similar scenario in the newspaper? Like you said, this is NY, not Utah.

  5. I think one of the reasons she wrote this is because of all the sex attacks on a rise right now in NYC. I think its a very good reminder of what can still happen. If you dont have anything nice to say why say it all Phoebe.

  6. Well Phoebe, first of all I think it is not nice to call this the "dumbest post" you've ever read, because frankly it's one of the smartest. Yes, us smart girls understand the risks and we would not do these silly, reckless things. But I think you take for granted how many dumb and perpetually drunk girls there are in NYC. I've seen many a girl being held up by guys being shoved into a cab. Does she know what's going on? There is such a shortage of good men these days, and especially in this city, some girls will do anything for attention. These things can happen. Maybe not to you or to me, but it can happen. Thank you Sarah for always try to bring attention to things that can help out us city girls.

  7. God Belinda. You sound really fun to hang out with. Bad things happen everywhere to drunk people, and unless this blog is geared towards 12 year olds that don't have a clue (which I certainly hope it isn't), this stuff is common sense...Matty- I've read this blog as a joke for a while now...but not addressing the sheer ridiculousness of the vocabulary and messages used on this one would only be enabling the stupidity, which I certainly didn't want to do.

  8. Well it's judgmental, catty girls like you who don't ever have to worry about having sex anyway. So maybe if everyone is like you, the one night stand thing doesn't even matter? Why don't you start your own blog and write about your 70 cats.

  9. Phoebe, I'm sure you have plenty of time to read this blog since you clearly don't go out anywhere. Unless there's some cool bar underneath the sand where your head is buried.

  10. You guys are funny. I blaze hotter guys and go to better parties than you with my eyes closed, and for the record I fucking hate cats. I'm done. Going back to making fun of you with my smarter and most likely more successful friends. At least you all don't realize you are losers..that would be more sad.

  11. Phoebe, by "blaze" guys, do you mean get overheated when they leave the bar with your skinnier friends? And by "hate" cats, do you mean hate that they're your only companions? Well, the cats and your favorite stuffed unicorn pillow? And by "smarter and most likely more successful friends" do you mean smarter and more successful at playing computer games and writing in Hello Kitty diaries?

    Enjoy single lie Phebes.

  12. "blaze"? clearly the STDs are blurring your intelligent thought, Phoebe. Go back to your "smarter" friends and talk about how you might get the sticks out of your yuppy asses.

ps. what is this job where you are so "successful" where you can read and reply to blogs all day? I guess even at the Gap they let you use your smart phone on break..

  13. Phoebe- you sound like a loser!

  14. Phoebe, which btw is my dog’s name, you need to get a clue! Its dumb girls like you that cry wolf when something bad happens because you are too naive to pay attention or to bother learning about the risks associated.

I personally do not partake in one-night stands but I know woman who do and I am glad that they play it safe and are well aware of the risks that a one-night stand involves.

Also, for those woman who do partake in one night stands and don't know the risks or do but brush it off, this article is a great reminder!

A big F-U for judging the writer for shedding light on a serious topic that not many writers have the courage to address.

  15. Even the most intelligent and put together girls-about-town need to remind themselves of safe dating and drinking habits. Unforunately, this is the state of the world we live in and as the economy continues to take a downward spiral, historical data proves that crime and the number of predators looking for an easy opportunity will continue to increase.

Any woman who thinks she knows it all when it comes to sexual health, is probably in the most danger to overlook keeping herself truly safe.

Keep writing Sarah and "Phoebe", adjust your attitude and don't waste your time reading if you aren't interested.

  18. Too bad all these comments aren't from guys - Phoebe could finally say a man spoke to her. Oh well, back to the Twilight message boards for her!

  19. I want to make this clear. No one cares about any parties anyone attends. If you do then that's extremely sad because half the people at these parties are the lowest rung people in the industry claiming to be someone just trying to get a free drink and post it on Facebook. Don't get me wrong parties are fun but everyone is having a party and anyone can get in at any time. It aint hard. Successful? Depends what you mean by successful. Titles mean nothing and half of these jobs are just what they are...jobs. Unless you own your own company then you're just a number. It sounds like she(Phoebe) is a 16 yr old girl attending a house party for the very first time. Or she was that girl that never got invited.

  20. As females, no matter our age, we need to always be aware of our surroundings. Staying safe today is very different today than when I was young(er). I agree, we all need a reminder every now & then to be careful, in more ways than one!
