Do You Like Him or His Attention?

(image via College Candy)

He tells you you’re beautiful.  Over and over again.  He texts you just to let you know he’s thinking about you.  And he actually picks up the phone and calls when he wants to tell you a story or to fill you in on his day.  He’s attentive, polite, affectionate, and above all, puts you on the pedestal you rightly deserve to be on.  This boy is head-over-heels (or at least unafraid to admit his feelings).  With all of his sweet words, soft touches, and starry-eyed stares, have you ever wondered if you like him or if you just like his attention?

After being treated badly by men in New York City, how can a girl not fall quickly for a guy who treats her with respect as he whispers sweet nothings into her ear?  This is obviously near impossible.  But, when meeting a new guy who treats you like gold, the last thing you want to do is lead him on or break his heart.  So what’s a girl to do?

How do you step back to tell the difference between liking a guy or just liking his attention? xo

  1. If a young woman can't tell the difference between attraction, liking someone, preferring attention, needing someone to occupy her time, then she's either lying to herself and others, or there is something seriously wrong with her emotional makeup.

I think what's interesting about the conundrum you pose here is that the posing of the question is what causes the anxiety. Some poor girl who doesn't know herself very well reads this and begins to think, "Maybe I'm callous and I don't even know it, or I have issues. What if he thinks I have issues? What if he actually doesn't like me?"

This feels like material fed from the Hearst grocery line checkout beast. I wish there was a more unified and sensitive way to talk about how men and women interact with each other, on common ground.

  2. I say enjoy the attention. If both parties get something out of it, it won't hurt for a short time anyway. Life is too short!
